Pneumonia is among the most solvable and preventable problems in global health, although it remains the leading infectious killer of young children around the world. In fact, pneumonia kills more children than other fatal infectious diseases –more than AIDS, measles and malaria combined (Fig.1.)- despite the fact that existing vaccines, medicines and treatments could save millions of children’s lives.
These cases are especially tragic since pneumonia can be effectively treated if diagnosed on time. An early diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia is fundamental for minimizing unnecessary pneumonia deaths. On November 12th, the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia - a global network of more than 125 NGOs, community-based organizations, academic institutions, government agencies and foundations - celebrates the World Pneumonia Day (WPD) to bring this health crisis to the forefront and take action against pneumonia. On this special day, Vircell joins hands with all advocates in the fight against pneumonia through its contribution with an advanced diagnosis of the disease.
Vircell offers a comprehensive portfolio of products, with more than 75 references in single and multitest format, for the detection of specific etiological agents responsible for infectious diseases in the respiratory tract.
Scientific literature has showed that, despite of recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, the etiologic agents responsible for pneumonia can rarely be identified in more than 50% of patients and consequently, antibiotics have been misprescribed. In view of this fact, Vircell is currently working on the development of new products for the multiplex detection of CAP - Community-acquired pneumonia- through innovative techniques (NAT: nucleid acid testing) that are accessible in all settings. This is our endeavour to optimize treatment solutions and thus, lower mortality rates in young children across the world.
